All Field NotesSplit the proposal into audit, fixes, content and ongoing work
“SEO” can cover several jobs. An audit identifies and prioritises issues; technical implementation changes templates, links or indexing rules; content work answers buyer questions; an ongoing programme reviews performance and plans the next work. Ask which parts the proposal includes.
Also distinguish one-off fees from recurring commitments. A monthly retainer may include implementation capacity, content production or reporting only. A standalone audit may leave all fixes to your developer. These are different purchases, so comparing their totals without scope can give you the wrong budget picture. Ask for tool/licence costs, owner inputs and exclusions on separate lines.
Check the depth of the audit deliverable
A quick automated scan and a reviewed catalog audit require different effort. Ask which templates and URL states will be sampled, what Search Console access is needed and how indexing, organic visibility and Merchant Center issues are distinguished. Confirm that findings include evidence and a proposed action.
Catalog structure affects scope more than the product count alone. Filters, variations, several languages and a migration can create policy and template work across many URLs. A useful supplier will explain those drivers. A long report is not automatically deeper if you still need to hire someone to decide which issues matter or how widely they apply.
An audit and a fix are different jobs
Check whether the quote includes implementation or only recommendations.
Audit
Inspect representative pages and available search evidence, then prioritise issues.
Evidence and implementation backlogImplementation
Apply agreed template, URL or content fixes and verify the changed output.
A separate priced deliverable
Give technical implementation its own allowance
Ask who will apply the recommendations and which changes are priced. Correcting a shared canonical output, changing navigation or replacing conflicting product markup involves the installed theme and extensions. Some work can be configured; other work needs code, staging tests and release support.
As a planning example, an audit estimated at 12 hours plus 18 hours of agreed template fixes, 10 hours of content and 4 hours of verification totals 44 hours. At a hypothetical agreed rate of £80 per hour, that is £3,520 before tax, licences or separately quoted services. These are example work packages and rates, not market benchmarks or a Religh offer. Replace them with your supplier’s actual scope and terms. If implementation is excluded, the 12-hour report is only the first part of that budget.

Define content and reporting in terms you can review
For content, agree the page types, topic research, writing, editing and business review. Product specifications and claims must come from reliable store knowledge. A fee for metadata edits does not cover a catalog rewrite, and an article allowance should state what each piece is meant to help a reader decide.
For ongoing reporting, ask which data will be used and what decisions the review supports. Search impressions, visits and qualified enquiries are different measures. Agree a baseline and useful context, including market and date range. A provider can verify a technical fix; future rankings and revenue require observation and cannot be guaranteed by a completed checklist.
Compare the same first outcome
Put proposals against one shared scope: audit depth, implementation, content, recurring work, verification and handover. Mark included, separate and unconfirmed items. This makes a lower quote easier to interpret: it may offer a smaller first phase rather than the same work at a different price.
If the cause is unclear, commission an assessment that gives you priorities and implementation estimates. If evidence already identifies a broken template or indexing rule, a focused fix may be the better first step. Keep release ownership and purchase-flow checks included where store code changes. The budget should fund an outcome you can inspect and give the next phase a clear starting point.

Common questions
How much should I budget for WooCommerce SEO?
Break the work into audit, technical implementation, content and ongoing review. Ask for effort or fixed deliverables for each, plus exclusions. The worked scope example above helps compare the assumptions without inventing a market price.
Is fixing the store included in an SEO audit fee?
Only when explicitly stated. Ask which findings will be implemented, by whom and how the completed change will be checked.
Is a monthly retainer necessary?
It depends on the ongoing job. A defined technical issue can be handled as a project. Continuing content, implementation and performance decisions need a clearly scoped ongoing arrangement.
Can an SEO provider guarantee rankings?
It can commit to deliverables and verify technical changes. Search positions and business outcomes depend on factors that require observation rather than a fixed guarantee.
