WooCommerce Variations Not Available: What to Check First
If a WooCommerce variation cannot be selected or added to the cart, check that exact option combination. Missing prices, disabled variations, stock settings and theme conflicts need different fixes.

All Field NotesPin down the combination that fails
Write down the product URL, selected size/colour or other attributes, and the message shown. Does every combination fail, or only one? Does the problem happen before selection, after selection or when adding the item to the cart? Those observations narrow the investigation.
Compare the failing option with a working sibling. Blue / Large failing while Blue / Medium works points you toward a child variation or mapping difference. Confirm that the store actually sells the failing combination; an intentionally absent option should not be created simply to remove an error message.
Open the affected child variation
In the variable product’s variation settings, locate the child that matches the chosen options. Check that it is enabled and has the required price. A parent’s price range does not prove every child can be purchased.
Compare the child’s configuration with a working variation. Missing values are a catalog issue before they are a theme diagnosis. Use the approved selling price and record the old state before editing; guessing a value can accidentally publish an offer the business never intended.
Check where stock is managed
Determine whether stock is managed at parent or variation level, then review the affected item’s quantity, status and backorder setting. Also check whether out-of-stock products are hidden. The relevant question is whether this exact option should be available under the store’s stock policy.
If an inventory system owns the data, inspect its mapping and last update. Manually setting the child in stock may appear to solve the symptom until the next sync changes it back. Preserve the real quantity and find the update responsible rather than forcing the whole product range to Available.

Compare attribute values and the intended combinations
Check that parent option values and child values still match. Imported labels, renamed terms, trailing spaces or inconsistent size names can leave the catalog expressing a different combination from the one staff expect.
Look for defaults that preselect an unavailable choice and for gaps that are deliberate. Do not generate every possible attribute combination as a blanket fix. The product should offer the approved range, and an unavailable size should remain unavailable while working siblings still reach the cart.
Why a variation may be unavailable
Check the selected combination, its own stock and the buying rules.
| Check | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Combination | Does the exact selected option have the intended child record? | Check attributes and enabled state. |
| Price and stock | Can that child be bought under the store’s stock policy? | Review its price and stock-management level. |
| Product page | Does the selector add the correct variation and amount? | Compare the storefront and cart result. |
Investigate swatches, scripts and templates next
If the child data is correct, review recent theme, swatch, pricing and product-option changes. Check whether the page shows a script error or behaves differently with the standard selection controls. This is where a controlled plugin/theme comparison becomes useful.
Take a backup and test on a private copy, changing one component at a time. Removing a plugin may expose a conflict but also remove a required buying feature. Keep the same product and option sequence in every comparison so the final repair addresses the actual failure.

Confirm the correct variation reaches the cart
After the correction, test the failing option, a working sibling and a deliberately unavailable combination. Check price, image, stock message and the item details after add-to-cart. On mobile, review the swatches or selectors as well as the cart result.
If a connector changes product data, repeat the check after its next controlled update. Record the cause and the specific field or component changed. A button becoming clickable is only progress; the fix is complete when the intended variation and amount are in the basket.
Common questions
Why is a WooCommerce variation unavailable when the parent is in stock?
The child can have different price, enablement and stock settings. Check the selected variation and the stock-management level rather than relying on the parent summary.
Can a missing price stop a variation being purchased?
Yes. Check the affected child’s required price and enabled state before investigating theme or plugin behaviour.
Should we recreate all variations?
Only recreate or add combinations the catalog actually sells. First inspect the existing mapping so you do not introduce duplicate or unintended buying options.
How do we know the variation fix worked?
The correct option displays its expected price and availability and reaches the cart with the right variation details. Working and intentionally unavailable siblings should still behave correctly.
